Tip #51: “Always Attend Onsite Events”
Always attend any corporate event hosted at work. Skipping it looks anti-social and casts you in a bad light. You don’t have to stay for the whole thing, as you can arrive late, though leaving early is better, and it’s actually better to not stay for every last second because it looks like you would rather be socializing than working!
Tip #52: “Assume You’re Paying”
Sometimes you get taken to lunch during your first week. Always assume that you’re paying your way because it sometimes sounds like it’s on them when it’s actually not. It can be hard to tell. Discreetly reach for your wallet when the check comes and let them wave you off, then say thanks. It’s less awkward than the reverse.
Tip #53: “It’s Not About the Coffee”
Some coworkers are fond of going to get coffee together and may invite you. Don’t turn down this invite until you’ve accepted several times first, even if you don’t drink the stuff. It’s not about the coffee. It’s about being social. Get a snack or water if you have to, but go. If you refuse from the start, the invites for this and other things will stop. You are rejecting them. Not wise.
Tip #54: “Humor the Birthday Events”
Adults shouldn’t care about birthdays at work, but some do and celebrate them to one degree or another, like a card that’s going around for signatures or even a cake and gift. You must once again participate even if you don’t want to, because it looks bad if you don’t. Just sign a card (you don’t have to write a note), eat some cake or wave it off because you’re on a diet, but put in an appearance, even if only for 30 seconds.
Tip #55: “Always Contribute to the Potluck…Somehow”
You should find a way to contribute to a potluck. Whether it’s cooking, buying pre-made items, offering cash (for others to get those items), or helping to setup or pack away, this is an opportunity to show willingness to do your part, however trivial. Freeloading is a poor look.
